The story

From a clergyman's patent to the keyring

The first patent for a corkscrew was granted in England in 1795 to the Reverend Samuel Henshall, whose design added a small disc above the spiral so the cork would turn and break its seal. Through the nineteenth century, inventors produced hundreds of variations, and in 1882 the German Karl Wienke patented the folding lever model now known as the waiter's friend, with a small blade for the foil.

Putting blade and spiral in one folding body is the idea this keychain carries on. Its glossy black wood handle, brass bolster, 4.6 cm stainless blade and fold-out corkscrew make it one of the sleekest keychains made in Pakistan in our range, and a fitting descendant of those old pocket tools.

Cork grows back after every harvest

The cork your keychain pulls is tree bark. It comes from the cork oak, which is stripped by hand roughly every nine years without being cut down; the bark simply grows back. A tree is usually around twenty-five years old before its first harvest, and wine stoppers tend to come from later harvests, since the first strippings are too rough for the job.

The brass bolster meets the wood flush, and the pins are polished level with the handle.
Extended, the corkscrew looks true when sighted from the side, and its point is sharp enough to bite a cork.
The 4.6 cm blade closes centred and does not touch the corkscrew inside the 6 cm handle.
