The spiral has a name of its own

Corkscrew collectors call the spiral the worm, and its shape matters more than its length. An open helix, a spiral wound around an empty centre like a pig's tail, grips the cork along its whole length. A worm with a solid central shaft, closer to a wood screw, tends to bore a channel instead, and can pull the crumbly middle out of an old cork while leaving the rest in the neck.

How a blue wooden handle gets its colour

No tree grows blue wood. Handles like this one are generally made from wood that has been dyed right through, often with a resin to stabilise it, so the colour runs into the grain rather than sitting on top like paint.
