Sharpen after the handle goes on, not before
Whatever state the edges arrive in, treat this blank as sharp, and leave the final sharpening until the handle is finished:
- While you shape and fit the scales, wrap the edges of the 27.5 cm blade in two layers of masking tape to protect your hands and the polish.
- Once the scales are riveted and any glue has cured, remove the tape and clamp the knife securely or hold it flat on the bench.
- Sharpen on a medium then a fine whetstone at around 20 degrees, keeping the stroke count equal on each side so the bevels meet the point evenly.
- Strop to remove the burr, then sight down the blade to check the point is centred.
Custom Pakistani daggers made from blanks like this are judged above all on that symmetry.
