Care & maintenance

Water is the one thing horn dislikes

Horn is a natural material made of keratin, and it reacts to water and heat much as fingernails do: it softens, swells and can lift in layers if soaked. Black horn handles with polished inox bolsters stay glossy for many years with a simple routine:

  • Wash by hand, quickly, and never leave the knives in the sink.
  • Dry the handles first, then the 420 blades.
  • Every few months, rub a little mineral oil or beeswax into the horn and buff it.
  • Keep the set in its wooden case, away from heaters, which can dry horn until it cracks.

This is Pakistani cutlery made the traditional way, and it rewards traditional care.

Questions & answers

Black horn set: honest answers

Does Pakistan make good knives?

It does, and this set is a fair sample of how to tell. Blades of 420 stainless steel, an inox bolster that cannot rust, natural horn polished to a deep shine and a matching steel in the case make a sound specification. Lay all six side by side when they arrive: each knife made in Pakistan to this standard should be identical in shape, with only the horn's natural sheen varying.

What is the price of the black horn knife set in Pakistan?

It is shown at the top of the page, in rupees for anyone in Pakistan, per complete set with its steel and case. Restaurants and shops can ask for volume pricing; rates fall as quantities rise, and a WhatsApp message or email with the number of sets is all we need to quote.

Is the horn real?

Yes, the handles are natural horn, not plastic. Look closely and you will usually see faint fibrous lines and slight variations in depth of colour, which no moulded handle reproduces.

Sharpening

Ten seconds on the steel before each meal

Honing little and often keeps every Pakistan steel knife in this set cutting cleanly; a stone is only needed when honing no longer helps.

  1. Hold the steel handle firmly and point the rod slightly downwards, away from your body and anyone nearby.
  2. Set the edge at roughly 20 degrees to the rod and sweep the blade from heel to tip in one smooth arc.
  3. Alternate sides, four strokes each, keeping the pressure light: the steel aligns the edge and does not need force.
  4. Test on a ripe tomato; if the edge still skids on the skin, give it a few minutes on a fine whetstone.
  5. Wipe the blade before the knife goes back on the table, so no metal dust reaches the horn.
Gift ideas

Who appreciates the gloss of black horn

Black horn reads as formal and timeless, which narrows the list of people this set suits and makes it a strong fit for them:

  • A father or grandfather who carves the roast and still believes good knives belong in a case.
  • A couple marking a milestone anniversary with a dinner they host themselves.
  • A business client who values craft over gadgets; private-label packaging can be discussed on request.
  • Anyone setting up a dark-toned dining room, where the inox bolsters catch the candlelight.

The sharpening steel in the case means the gift keeps working long after it is unwrapped.
