Questions & answers

Walnut set: questions before you buy

Are knives made in Pakistan any good?

They can be, and this set gives you three easy things to check. The 420 stainless blades should show an even bevel along all six edges; the inox bolsters should meet the walnut without a step; and the sharpening steel should be straight and clean. Walnut is a classic handle wood, fine-grained and stable, chosen here for its dark tone.

Is the price shown for one knife or the whole set?

For the whole set: six knives, the steel and the wooden case. Visitors in Pakistan see that price in rupees (PKR) at the top of the page. Buying for a shop or a hotel? The rate per set drops with quantity, so send us your numbers on WhatsApp or by email.

How dark is the walnut?

Walnut ranges from chocolate to greyish brown, often with darker streaks, so no two handles are identical. It is noticeably darker than the acacia sets in the range and deepens slightly once oiled.

How to use

First evening with a new walnut set

Before the six knives meet their first dinner, a short routine sets them up for years of use:

  1. Wash each knife by hand in warm, soapy water to remove dust from the case and packing, then dry it straight away.
  2. Rub a few drops of food-safe oil into the 12 cm walnut handles, leave it ten minutes and buff off the excess.
  3. Give each blade four or five light strokes per side on the steel, so every edge starts aligned.
  4. Lay them at the table with the edge facing the plate, to the right of each setting.
  5. After the meal, wash, dry and return them to the case rather than a cutlery drawer, where they knock together.

That is how any Pakistan cutlery with wooden handles should begin its life.

Care & maintenance

Dishwashers, radiators and walnut handles

Walnut is a stable hardwood, but it is still wood; the 420 blades and inox bolsters of each Pakistan knife here are the easy part.

  • Keep the knives out of the dishwasher: heat and harsh detergent bleach walnut and can open the joint at the bolster.
  • Never leave them in the washing-up bowl; dry each one as soon as it is clean.
  • Oil the handles when they start to look pale or dry, usually every few months.
  • Keep the case away from radiators and sunny windowsills, since dry heat makes wood shrink and crack.
Sharpening

Using the steel the safe way, tip down

The sharpening steel in the case realigns edges rather than grinding new ones, so use it often and lightly:

  1. Stand the steel upright with its tip on a folded cloth on the table, holding the handle firmly.
  2. Place the heel of the blade against the top of the steel at about 20 degrees.
  3. Draw the knife down and towards you, so the whole 11.5 cm edge has passed over the steel by the time you reach the bottom.
  4. Alternate sides, five or six strokes each, with no more pressure than the weight of the knife.

When honing stops restoring the bite, a stainless steel Pakistan knife like these needs a few minutes on a fine whetstone, then it goes back to the steel.
