Reading the steel on a compact Damascus dagger
With no bolster between blade and wood, the joint on this knife is in plain sight, so that is where quality shows first:
- The olive wood meets the steel in a clean, tight line, with no filler.
- Tilt the 12 cm blade under a lamp: the pattern should be crisp all over, right down to the edge.
- Run a fingertip gently along the decorative notches on the spine; they should feel finished, not rough.
- The point is centred, and the bevels match on both sides.
A Pakistan Damascus knife that passes these four checks is ready for the shelf.
