Are Damascus knives from Pakistan any good?

Pakistan has a long-standing reputation for hand-forged Damascus, and a blank lets you inspect the steel with nothing hidden. Check that the pattern runs continuously into the fuller and out to both edges, with no open seams or dark inclusions. The tang is bare too, so you can follow the layers along its whole 12 cm length.

What comes in the package?

Forge-welded billet to finished blank

Pattern-welded Damascus starts as a stack of two contrasting steels, heated and hammer-welded into one billet, then drawn out, folded or twisted and welded again until the layers number in the dozens or hundreds. The billet is forged to a dagger profile, the central fuller is ground in, and the blade is hardened, polished and etched in acid, which darkens the layers at different rates and reveals the pattern.

A Pakistani Damascus knife sold as a blank stops there, leaving the wavy 12 cm tang bare, with its mounting holes ready for the maker's own scales. Whoever finishes it decides whether it becomes a working piece or a luxury dagger with exotic wood, horn or bone.

Carry & safety

Unfinished, but still a blade

A blank without a handle is still a dagger blade, and many rules on daggers apply to it as soon as it is sold, shipped or carried. Check the regulations where you live before ordering, and again before selling a finished piece made from it. In the workshop, keep it in its leather case between sessions and out of reach of children. Retailers supplying makers should apply the age checks they use for finished knives.
