What makes a good knife for a firefighter?

Anything that shortens the time between reaching for the knife and finishing the job. That means a handle you can grip in gloves, tools that need no hunting for, and an opening action that works with one hand. Sharpening

Quick field touch-ups on a tanto edge

Between proper sessions, a quick touch-up keeps this tanto working:

With a ceramic rod or a small pocket stone, hold the main edge at around 20 degrees and make a few light passes from the heel to the angle near the tip.
Treat the short front edge as a separate edge, at the same angle.
Use a carbide notch sparingly, a couple of light pulls only, because carbide removes metal fast.
Leave the seatbelt cutter alone unless it drags; a thin tapered diamond rod can then touch up the inside of the hook.

Side windows shatter, windscreens hold together

A glass breaker only works on the right glass. Side windows on most cars are tempered, so a hard point striking near the edge releases built-in stress and the pane crumbles into small cubes. Windscreens, and some newer side windows, are laminated with a plastic layer that holds the glass together, which is why fire crews cut them with glass saws rather than relying on the breaker found on firefighter knives.

How to use

Breaking a side window with the pommel

Learn the steps before you ever need them:

Pick the side window furthest from any occupant; never the windscreen, which is laminated.
Hold the closed knife firmly, pommel down, with your thumb wrapped around the handle.
Strike near a lower corner of the glass with a short, sharp movement; the centre of the pane flexes more.
Turn your face away as the glass crumbles, then clear the remaining fragments from the frame with a gloved hand before reaching in.
If a seatbelt is jammed, use the belt-cutter hook next.
