Choosing Mushroom Knives

Buying guide

Brush, lanyard or Damascus: the foraging knife options

Every mushroom knife here folds a 7.5 cm curved blade into a 12 cm handle, so the choice turns on extras and finish.

  • Brush: hard bristles at the end of the handle clean soil and needles off the cap before the mushroom goes in the basket, as on the Teak Wood Handle Mushroom Knife.
  • Lanyard: a cord loop keeps the knife attached to wrist or basket when you kneel in long grass or leaf litter.
  • Finish: plain and knotty teak, acacia in rosewood and dark tones, a glossy black version, and a brass floral inlay on dark wood.
  • Steel: stainless on all but one; the Damascus Blade Mushroom Knife with Acacia Wood Handle is the model to offer gift buyers.

Among Pakistan pocket knives, this is our most seasonal line. Garden centres and outdoor shops sell most of their stock from late summer to the end of autumn, so orders are best placed in spring. A practical opening range is two brush models, two lanyard models and the Damascus piece. On arrival, check that the bristles are firmly set and that the curved edge is even right to the tip.

Did you know?

Foragers do not always reach for the knife

A knife is for mushrooms you already know. When a find is uncertain, experienced foragers ease it out whole instead, because some of the most dangerous species, the death cap among them, are identified partly by the cup-shaped volva at the base of the stem, which a clean cut leaves behind in the soil. Once a species is identified with certainty, it is cut, brushed and laid in the basket, and a knife made in Pakistan with a built-in brush handles both steps.

Questions & answers

Mushroom knife questions before the season

Does Pakistan make good knives?

Yes, and a mushroom knife quickly shows whether a maker cares about small details. The bristles must be set firmly so they do not shed into the basket, the curved blade must close centred, and the wood must be smooth enough to hold with wet, cold hands. Those are the points to check on a sample before ordering for the season.

How do I clean the brush?

Tap out loose soil after each outing, rinse the bristles in lukewarm water and let the knife dry open in the air before folding it. Avoid soaking the wooden handle, and give the pivot a drop of oil at the end of the season.

Is a sheath available?

Three of the models list a compatible leather sheath on their product page, sold separately. The cord lanyard versions are also easy to hang from a belt loop or a basket handle when foraging.

When should a shop place its order?

Ideally in spring or early summer, so stock is on the shelf before the first autumn walks. The minimum depends on the model; send your target quantities and we will confirm.
