How to use

Foraging with the black-handled knife, step by step

  1. Before setting out, open and close the knife once to check it moves smoothly, and thread the optional sheath (ref. 2073, sold separately) onto your belt if you use one.
  2. At each find, cut the stem cleanly above the soil with the curved edge, pulling the blade towards you.
  3. Keep uncertain specimens whole, base included, in a separate container for identification.
  4. Brush the cap and gills with the bristles at the end of the glossy black handle before the mushroom joins the basket.
  5. Back home, rinse the ABS handle under the tap, dry the knife and fold it.

This Pakistan pocket knife shrugs off mud better than wood, which is the whole point of a black handle.

Questions & answers

Black handle, lock and price questions

Does the lock mechanism feel secure?

Judge it by feel the day it arrives. Open the blade fully; with the glossy black handle in your fist, press the spine lightly in each direction and you should feel no play at all. Folding it should take a clear, deliberate push. Shut, the edge should sit centred, not rubbing the inside of the handle. If anything feels loose, contact us before the knife reaches a customer.

Is the pocket knife price in Pakistan shown in rupees?

Yes. Visitors from Pakistan see the unit price in PKR at the top of the page, and WhatsApp is the quickest way to order. The rate per knife falls as quantities rise, so retailers should ask us for a wholesale quote.

What is the black handle made of?

ABS, a tough, glossy plastic that ignores rain and mud and needs only a rinse to clean. Paired with the polished brass bolster, it makes this stainless Pakistan knife one of the easiest in the mushroom range to look after.

The story

Bakelite, ABS and the rise of the plastic handle

Before plastics, knife handles were wood, bone, horn or metal. Celluloid appeared in the late nineteenth century, and in 1907 Leo Baekeland created Bakelite, the first fully synthetic plastic. By the 1930s it was being moulded into cutlery handles, valued because water did not swell or rot it.

ABS arrived after the Second World War and proved tougher still; LEGO switched its bricks to it in 1963 for its strength and gloss. On this mushroom knife, ABS gives a deep black handle that suits muddy autumn work, and Pakistani knives made this way offer a practical alternative to the wood versions in the range, with a brass bolster and a cleaning brush to finish it.

Pro tip

Rinse the brush, not just the blade

After a damp walk, soil and spores collect in the bristles at the end of the handle, and a dirty brush simply smears the next cap. Hold the closed knife brush-end down under running water, work the bristles with your thumb, then shake it and let it air-dry before storage. The glossy black ABS handle and brass bolster need nothing more than a wipe.
