Stainless steel started life on the dinner table
Stainless steel's first commercial job was cutlery. When Harry Brearley developed his rust-resisting chromium steel in Sheffield in 1913, local cutlers were among the first to put it to use, in table knives that until then stained as soon as they met vinegar or fruit juice. The 420 grade used for these six 11.5 cm blades belongs to the same family of hardenable stainless steels, and it remains a mainstay of table knives everywhere, Pakistan cutlery included.
