Know-how from our Sialkot workshop

Display & retail

Letting white bone stand out on the shelf

White bone handles disappear on a pale shelf and glow on a dark one, so plan the backdrop first.

  • Show the open case on dark wood, slate or black velvet so the six handles and inox bolsters stand out.
  • Keep it away from hot spotlights and sunny windows, which dry natural materials on long-standing display stock.
  • Place it alongside the horn sets to offer a light-and-dark choice, and suggest one of each to couples who cannot agree.
  • Label it clearly as natural bone; customers who know Pakistan cutlery often ask, and the answer helps the sale.
  • Mention the included sharpening steel on the price card.
Questions & answers

Natural bone handles: what to expect

What is the price of this bone-handled knife set in Pakistan?

US$27.50 per piece (PKR 8,200 for buyers in Pakistan). From 50 pieces the price drops to US$19.25 per piece. For a larger order, send us the quantity on WhatsApp or by email and we will quote a lower rate.

Will the white bone change colour?

Slowly, yes. Natural bone tends to mellow towards cream over years of use, which many owners like. Hand washing and quick drying keep the change gentle and even.

Did you know?

Victorian servants kept knife handles out of water

Nineteenth-century household guides were strict about knives with bone and ivory handles: wash the blades, but keep the handles out of hot water. Heat could soften the resin that fixed blades into their handles and turn the bone yellow or make it crack. The advice still holds for modern bone handles, and following it lets them age the way the best vintage Pakistan knives have: mellow, not cracked.

Made in Sialkot

Turning bone into a smooth white handle

Bone for knife handles is generally a by-product of the meat trade, usually from cattle. It is cleaned, degreased and whitened before being cut into blanks, then shaped to the 12 cm handle profile, fitted to the blade and smoothed through finer and finer abrasives. A final buffing brings out a soft sheen rather than a hard gloss.

Bone differs from horn at every stage: it is harder, more brittle and full of tiny pores, so it must be worked with care to avoid cracks. Sialkot's handle-makers have long worked with both materials, and this set pairs the bone with polished inox bolsters, blades of 420 steel and a sharpening steel in a wooden case.
