Questions & answers

Asked about this black horn grafting knife

How is this grafting knife priced for buyers in Pakistan?

US$4.70 per piece (PKR 1,816 for buyers in Pakistan). From 50 pieces the price drops to US$3.29 per piece. For a larger order, send us the quantity on WhatsApp or by email and we will quote a lower rate.

Is the black horn natural?

Yes. Horn is a natural material, so the shade varies from knife to knife, and some handles show faint lighter streaks in the black. It feels warm in the hand and comfortable in cold weather, one reason it has long been used on country knives.

Sharpening

Dressing a hooked edge in two zones

A hooked blade has two parts to its edge: a straighter section near the bolster and the curve towards the point. Treat them separately.

  1. Sharpen the straight section on a flat whetstone, around 1000 grit, holding the existing bevel angle with light strokes.
  2. Move to the rounded edge of the stone, or a round rod, for the curve, so the abrasive can reach into the hook.
  3. Blend the two zones with long, light strokes on a fine stone so there is no step where they meet.
  4. Strop on a strip of leather wrapped round a broom handle; the curve follows it naturally.

Between full sharpenings, three or four passes on a fine rod after each grafting session keep this grafting knife ready for the next row.

Gift ideas

Thank-you presents for people who grow things

A hooked knife with a black horn handle has an old-fashioned look that suits gifts with some meaning behind them, and its 10 cm handle fills an adult hand comfortably.

  • The neighbour who taught you to graft, or the nurseryman who gave you your first scions.
  • A home winemaker with a few rows of vines, who prunes every winter and harvests every autumn.
  • New owners of a house with an old fruit tree in the garden.
  • A corporate gift from an agricultural supplier to its best customers, with the company's mark added on request.

Add a leather sheath and it is ready to wrap.

Care & maintenance

Looking after black horn and stainless steel

Horn is natural keratin, much like a fingernail, and it reacts to water and heat. The steel needs less attention, but sap is its enemy.

  • After work, wipe sap off the blade with a cloth moistened with rubbing alcohol; dried resin dulls the edge and drags on every cut.
  • Never leave the knife soaking or put it in a dishwasher: horn can swell, lift at the bolster and crack as it dries.
  • Keep it away from radiators and hot car dashboards, where dry heat makes horn brittle.
  • Every few months, rub a drop of mineral oil or a little beeswax into the horn and buff it.
  • Put one drop of oil on the pivot so the blade keeps opening smoothly.

A stainless Pakistan knife with a horn handle, treated like this, keeps its polish for years.
