How a bone-handled folder is put together

Bone handles like this one are generally cut from cattle bone, a by-product of the meat trade. The bone is cleaned, degreased and whitened, then sawn into thin slabs that are shaped, fitted to the knife and polished until the surface is smooth and close-grained. Every slab is slightly different, so small variations in tone are normal.

In Sialkot, where knives made in Pakistan have been produced for export for generations, a two-tool folder such as this calls for careful fitting: the hooked blade and the bark lifter must each open on their own and fold away cleanly side by side inside the 10 cm handle, behind a polished inox bolster.

What is the difference from the compact bone model?

Size and blade shape. This one has a 10 cm handle and a 7.5 cm hooked blade, which reaches further and also manages light pruning. The compact model pairs a shorter hawksbill blade with the bark lifter in a smaller handle, better suited to budding and pocket carry.

Care & maintenance

White bone, kept clean in the orchard

Bone is porous, so soil, sap and tannins from bark can stain it if they are left to dry on. A short routine keeps the handle pale and the blade bright.

Wipe the handle with a barely damp cloth and a touch of mild soap after work, then dry it at once.
Never soak it or put it in a dishwasher; water and heat can open hairline cracks in bone.
Twice a year, rub in a drop of mineral oil to stop the bone drying out.
Clean sap from the hooked blade and the bark lifter with rubbing alcohol, which also disinfects them between trees.
Polish the inox bolster with a dry cloth.
