Care & maintenance

Glossy black ABS: what to use and avoid

ABS needs less care than wood, but it has one weakness worth knowing: some solvents, acetone in particular, can soften or cloud its surface.

  • Wash the knife in warm, soapy water and dry it at once; the ABS will not swell, but the joint should not stay wet.
  • Keep nail-varnish remover and strong solvents well away from the handle.
  • Rub the brass pins occasionally with a soft cloth to keep them bright against the black.
  • Oil the pivot with one drop of light oil every few weeks.

Does the lock mechanism feel secure?

Try it as soon as it arrives. A properly assembled knife opens to a firm stop and holds the 9 cm blade straight, without play when you press on the spine or push the tip sideways. Sharpening

Pull-through or stone for the black ABS folder

  1. For quick touch-ups, a carbide pull-through or pocket sharpener restores bite in a few strokes; pull gently and let the tool do the work.
  2. For a proper edge, use a whetstone at about 20 degrees, starting on a medium grit.
  3. Keep strokes even along the full 9 cm edge so the tip does not get rounded.
  4. Finish on a fine stone and strop to remove the burr.
  5. Wash off the steel filings, which wipe easily from the glossy ABS.

Used sparingly, a pull-through is fine; used every day, it removes more steel than the edge needs.
